One of the most popular snack in Korea :D

Why is choco pie so popular ?

Did you know that Choco pie has a history !?

This is a story that I heard from a tour guide and my korean friend (famous in korea, apparently).

Origin was the moon pie(cracker sandwiched with marshmallows) made in the US (1917), made especailly for the workers in the coal mine,. After the WW2/ Korean war, this moon pie became popular in east Asia. 

When South Korea was ruling the north, treating them as slaves, they rewarded them with choice pies. As well as the money pay, they received at most 20 choco pies as a reward (fee/pay). Workers could trade this in the black market. Choco pie was so popular, and the chocopie price/ value rose. Since, chocopie was also said that it represented money there.Thus, chocolate pie is one representative of the economic development of the country. 

Real origin ...

1958, Japan Morinaga confectionary made a similar pie named “Angel pie” sandwiching mashmellos with soft cake. 

And in 1974, Korea Toukyou confectionary made a similar pie named “Orion Choco pie "

The taste of marshmallows and the cheapness, targeted (was loved ) by a range of people. 

1979, Lotte made a similar Chocopie. 

From 2000, Orion has started the oversea market , in fact its 3rd of the income is from the over sea market !!! Implying how popular it is becoming overseas too .

[Different types]

You'll see the variety of choice pies in korean markets.

They look similar but actually differs in taste and content.

Like the cream, cake, chocolate etc.... Size and design is quite similar though .

I didn't like chocopie until I came to korea, because even though you don't buy it, you receive it anywhere and automatically I ate it. I especially like the real chocolate ones, or the healthy organic ones which have use rich chocolate. However, most people will say the Orion basic ones are the best !
