Smelt Fishing in Korea xxx 初 ワカサギ釣りin 韓国 !
(Hiya Annyon Nihao Konnichiwa)
Korea(Seoul) has become more and warmer these days with the average temperature of something around 0 degrees ! Which is much warmer than December or the start of January where it was -10degrees ... It's nearly February so I thought I wanted to upload the blog beforeJanuary ends. So, today's topic will be about "Smelt Fishing "!!!
Do you know what smelts are in the first place ??
I don't know specifically either, but they're just these small typical fish approx. 6 inch(15cm) in size which are found in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
From when I lived in Japan, I always wanted to experience this "smelt fishing" where you make a hole in thick ice and fish, because it was really cool when I heard stories about it and also watched it on tv.
Unfortunately in Japan we need to go to special places out from the city to the countryside and to the north which takes time and money thus I always couldn't go.
BUT !!!
IN Korea, I found a place that you can go from Seoul only 1 hour 30mins by car and you're there ! "smelt fishing ice lake" !!!First you buy tickets to go in...
and buy fishing equipment if needed,,,
Since it was our first time, we bought fishing rods, some bait.
There were many people using fishing rods like us
but also people using plastic rods that had a really simple structure which was string rapped around the plastic handle. Especially small children were using this.
It was freezing because we're on the ice lake for more than 4 hours and so, we got really hungry. There were some tents on the side of the lake selling some warm food and drinks so ... I bought my favourite warm food, 'Oden': Japanese winter dish of processed fishcakes stew in light soy flavoured daishi soup. This was delicious especially warmed up my entire body and made me alive.
I waited for 1 hour but literally nothing happened. I was going to give up because people sitting around me were getting more than 3 smelts in an hour.
first let the string down until it touches the bottom of the lake and make the string tight. The move the rod up and down several times to feel the sinker and wait for some fish to come.
When I felt something pulling my rod for the first time I started moving my rod to hook the smelts mouth that is eating. Then I began pulling up and finally I found one smelt on my rod!
At the end, I caught 12 smelts !!! I put them all in a plastic bowl with the fresh lake water.
In the early morning (about 7 o'clock) there were hardly any people, however when it was 12 o'clock I could find many people!! especially families !
New holes were been made with this special machines ...
PM 12:30 we finished our smelt fishing and head off to our lunch on the way back home.
Guess what we ate for lunch !!!!
Of-course smelts that we just fished xxx yum yum
There are many ways to cook but we chose to deep-fry them and eat them with a bit of salt.
They tasted quite good ! fresh and sweet (no bitter taste)!
We eat the head to tail of the smelt because even though they have bones, they are small and weak so it is eatable. Also they contain many calcium and phosphorus etc... so they're good for you !
If you have any chance I think it's lovely to go and experience "SMELT FISHING" !!
Easy for any non fishing experiencers and you can enjoy it especially with friends and family, ending with eating up the delicious smelts that you caught :) hehe
Hope you have a lovely February xxx
Cool Asia !

Hiya
